ABSTRACT
Objectives: To compare the efficacy and tolerance of misoprostol administered either by oral solution or oral tablet for control of menorrhagia in lactating women using Copper T380A intrauterine device. Design: Randomized comparative study. Setting: Gynecologic clinic of Woman's Health Center, Assiut University, Egypt. Patients and methods: 120 lactating women using Copper T380A intrauterine device for more than 3 months and complaining of menorrhagia were enrolled in the study from August 2011 to December 2012. They were randomly divided into two equal groups. Both groups were evaluated in two consecutive menstrual cycles. In the first cycle without treatment and in the second cycle by either oral solution or oral tablet misoprostol (200 μg tablet three times daily for the first three days of bleeding). Estimated menstrual blood loss was assessed before and after treatment and adverse effects were also assessed. Results: The treatment resulted in significant reduction in the menstrual blood loss (P < 0.00). The reduction was significantly higher with oral solution misorprostol than with oral tablet misoprostol (P < 0.05). The adverse effects were significantly higher with oral solution misoprostol (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Misoprostol is effective in reducing menstrual blood loss in lactating women using Copper T380A intrauterine device. However, oral misoprostol solution is more effective but with more side effects than oral misoprostol tablet.
