Meningococcal meningitis is a major health problem in the Nile Valley (1). The epidemiological and clinical features of the disease in Egypt are similar to those of the Subsaharan" Meningitis Belt" of Africa, the disease is seasonal with major outbreaks occurring every 8-10 years (1, 2). The main causative organism is Neisseria meningitidis sero-group A (3). This study reports on the epidemiological and clinical aspects of 686 patients with confirmed meningococcal meningitis, admitted during the period from November 1983 through October 1989 to the Abbassia Fever Hospital, US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) ward in Cairo, Egypt. This fever hospital is a referral center, serving a population of 13 million and reflects the incidence of this disease throughout Egypt.
