A Workshop at Assiut University Recommending the Establishment of a Unified Network for Research and Development between the Arab and Islamic Countries

Under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mostafa. M. Kamal, President of Assiut University, and Prof. Dr. Abdel Fattah Mahmoud Mohamed, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering has organized a workshop entitled "Research and development between the university and industry." Prof. Dr. Mohammed Abul-Kasem, the vice dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, announced that the workshop covered several topics, such as: the motives of research and development, the reality of research and development in industry, the link between research and development units in industry, university and research centers, the transfer and understanding of new technological innovations and encouraging research and development. The workshop concluded a number of recommendations, including: ·        The need for a scientific adviser or advisory board subsidiary to the Prime Minister. This board should include, among its members,  the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Minister of Industry. ·        Linking the Arab and Islamic countries in a unified network in the field of research and development in order to achieve benefit without facing the duality of effort and money. ·        Identifying the research priorities and future ambitions of the state. ·        Developing the internal bylaws of the faculties of Engineering and update the courses to support research and development. ·        Activating and following-up the summer training of the students. ·        Stimulating the two-way channel between the university and industry to support research and development through providing postgraduate fellowships for the distinguished industrial engineers. ·        Supporting the translation of sciences, particularly the science of engineering, into Arabic. To achieve this, each department should put a scientific action plan to translate its branch into Arabic, thus creating an Arabic library in engineering sciences. ·        Re-examining the criteria for promotion of the faculty members to include their contribution in activating research and development between the university and industry. ·        Benefiting from The Industrial Modernization Centre (IMC) and the expansion of technological incubators to support research, development and innovation. ·        Establishing a department or unit of research and development in each industrial facility with the need to characterize its tasks, follow-up its work, and link these units with universities and research centers in order to achieve the goals and activate the role of both the council of Graduate Studies and Research and the council of Community Service and Environmental Development. ·        Encouraging and motivating the employees ·        Training the research and development groups to build mathematical models of industrial processes in different field. ·        Inviting the committee of engineering studies sector of the Supreme Universities Council to activate and follow up these recommendations.
