Dr. Mahmoud Fahmi Al Subhi lecturer, Department of Pharmaceutics,
Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Assiut, has just arrived from Germany after a
successful participation in the proceedings of the thirty six annual forum held
in the German Island Indwa. This forum included a number of 34 world Nobel prize
winners meeting with younger generation of researchers from 78 countries.
Dr. Subhi indicated that his presentation was on the use of nano-drugs
as a modern technique for the treatment and diagnosis of diseases, especially
cancer. He also explained that the nano-drug-technology can be applied in the
treatment of a wide range of illnesses due to the flexibility of its components;
a feature that allows the modification of its components and features so that
the drug may reach to the location of disease and reduce the amount reaching the
other parts of the body; a matter that increases the possibilities of treatment
and reduces side effects. Al Sobhi’s lecture focused on the development of
minute Nano particles loaded with anti-cancer drugs.
Dr. Subhi added that a new centre has been established in Assiut University
aiming at the development of drugs manufacture based on nano-technology for the
treatment of the diseases prevailing in Egypt, especially liver diseases and
tumors. This center is located next to the largest hospital of liver and
cardiology in Upper Egypt. thus will provide an ideal environment to focus on
the development of such drugs.
The team working on the nano-unit includes Dr. Mustafa Hamad,
Professor of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and director of Rajhi Hospital for
liver together with a number scientists of international reputation and acclaim.
The centre aims at developing products which are viable for
clinical application and for marketing locally and internationally for the
purpose of improving the treatment of a wide range of diseases, improving
scientific research, and developing Egyptian national economy. Dr. Sobhi
asserted that this centre will provide opportunities for research collaboration
within and outside the national borders. Besides, the centre will lead to an
economic and scientific boom in Egypt by providing drugs which treat various
diseases at a much cheaper price, in addition to reducing the amount of the
imported drugs.
