Assiut University organizes a scientific seminar on "economic and social empowerment in Egypt" with the participation of Dr. Nevin El-gabag

Under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy, president of Assiut University, Assiut University organized, today, Sunday, June 29, 2025, a scientific symposium entitled "Economic and social empowerment in Egypt.. Towards an effective role for universities", in cooperation between the Civil Society Support Center and the Professional Programs Unit at the Faculty of Commerce, and in the presence of Dr. Nevin Al-Qabbaj, former minister of social solidarity, guest of honor and keynote speaker at the seminar.

  In a statement on this occasion, Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy stressed the importance of organizing such scientific seminars that embody the societal and developmental role played by the University, pointing out that economic and social empowerment is one of the main axes in building a human being, which the state pays great attention to under the New Republic.

  The president of the University explained that the partnership between universities, state institutions and civil society has become a necessity to achieve sustainable development, appreciating the participation of Dr. Nevin Al-qabaj and what she represents of an honorable model of social and developmental leadership.

  Upon her arrival at the University, Dr. Nevin Al-qabaj was received by Dr. Ahmed Abdulmoula, vice president for education and student affairs, who welcomed her, praising her pioneering national career in leading the social protection system, stressing that Assiut University always welcomes every scientific and national stature that contributes to enriching academic dialogue and addressing priority development issues.

The seminar activities were launched under the supervision of Dr. Mahmoud Abdul Alim, vice president of the University for community service and environmental development, and in the presence of Dr. Alaa Abdul Hafeez, dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Dr. Nesma Heshmat, vice dean for graduate studies and research, and Dr. Abdullah Faisal Allam, director of the Civil Society Support Center and coordinator of the seminar.

In his speech during the seminar, Dr. Mahmoud Abdulalim explained that organizing this event comes within the framework of the University's keenness to open real channels of communication with the outside community, pointing out that empowerment is not built only through policies, but through changing culture, integrating roles, and empowering young people scientifically and professionally to participate in building the future. He added that universities should be an engine of societal change, support social innovation, and produce actionable knowledge.

For his side, Dr. Alaa Abdul Hafeez pointed to the keenness of the Faculty of Commerce to keep abreast of the developments of the labor market locally and internationally, pointing out that the faculty has a distinguished set of diverse professional programs in various disciplines, which aim to qualify graduates for the labor market inside and outside Egypt, in order to enhance the opportunities for sustainable economic empowerment and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

In her speech during the seminar, Dr. Nevin Al-qabbaj expressed her happiness to be present at Assiut University, praising the good reception and hospitality, and described the university as a beacon of Science and knowledge that extends for more than 70 years, and has a prominent leadership in the fields of Education, Social Work and community service. She stressed that Egypt is a leading country in devoting the concepts of public work and volunteering, and has maintained its development role even in times of crisis.

Dr. Nevin Al-qabbaj stressed the importance of enhancing the societal role of universities through their development centers and units, and educating young people on effective social participation, pointing out that investing in people has become a strategic necessity, not a luxury, in light of accelerated technological transformations such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation, and praised Assiut University's leadership in this framework.

She added that the development work in Egypt still lacks a sound scientific vision, better coordination of human resources, and optimal exploitation of economic potential, calling for the promotion of developmental, social and technological research within universities, praising the continuation and success of Graduate Professional Programs at the Faculty of Commerce at Assiut University.

For her side, Dr. Nessma Heshmat expressed her pleasure in organizing the seminar, stressing that economic and social empowerment is one of the axes of sustainable development, and it cannot be separated from the role of universities in preparing cadres capable of innovation, production and community participation.

Dr. Abdullah Faisal explained that the seminar comes as part of a series of events aimed at opening an institutional dialogue on the role of the University in promoting social justice, adding that the seminar discussed a number of important axes, including: challenges facing poverty, and Target groups in empowerment strategies, including women, youth, people with disabilities, and residents of rural areas. She also addressed the empowerment approaches in various state programs such as" Takaful and dignity"," decent life"," opportunity", the relationship between government policies and civil initiatives, and the partnership between the two parties.

The seminar concluded with an open discussion session that raised a set of questions about the reality of empowerment in Egypt, and the role of the University in enhancing it, and stressed the importance of building strategic partnerships between the University and the private sector to encourage entrepreneurship among young people and linking education with the labor market.

  Dr. Nevin El-qabag participated in the discussion of the master's thesis submitted by researcher Iman Omar Abdel-Samy, lecturer at the Department of political science and Public Administration at the Faculty of Commerce, entitled: "poverty reduction policies in Egypt (2010-2020)", where the governance and discussion Committee included Dr. Abdessalam Noyer, professor of political science and head of the Department of political science and Public Administration (Chairman and supervisor), Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Adawi, professor of political science and vice dean of the college for education and student affairs (supervisor), and Dr. Nevin El-qabag, Minister of solidarity Dr. Abdullah Faisal, assistant professor of political science ( internal member), and Dr. Suleiman Saeed Hassan, assistant professor of economics and head of the Department of Economics and public finance (supervisor).Miss. Reham El-Hefnawi, director general of the vice president's office for community service and environmental development.
