Morbidity Profile and its relation with Disability among Elderly attending Geriatric social clubs in Assiut City, Egypt

Background:
Morbidity among elderly people has an important influence on their physical functioning and psychological well being. The most important health problem of elderly is related to chronic disease.
Aim of the study:
To describe morbidity and disability patterns among geriatric population aged 60 years and above residing geriatric homes and attending geriatric social clubs in Assiut city.
Subjects and methods:
A cross- sectional study was carried out among elderly people residing geriatric homes and attending geriatric social clubs in Assiut city
Results:
Total sample size was 243 participants with age ranged from 60-85 years old and 79.8% of the studied population was 60-69 years and 47.7% were males while 52.3% were females. The major self reported morbidities were hypertension (40.3%), diabetes mellitus (35.8%) and arthritis (25.5%). Over weight/obesity represent 53.1%. 12.8% of the studied population exposed to injuries in the last year. Regarding disability, the prevalence rate of ADL disability was 20.2% while the prevalence of IADL disability was 65%. Chronic diseases were one of the important risk factors for disability.
