In this study, 250 samples of raw milk, ice cream and human faeces (n=50 samples each) randomly collected from Assiut, Egypt between April and September 2003 were screened for Listeria spp. SDS-PAGE was also used to determine the degree of homogeneity between the isolated strains. Listeria spp. were isolated from raw marketable milk, small scale ice cream, farm milk and in the faeces of farm workers, but not from large scale ice cream. L. grayi was isolated from raw and farm milk and in small scale ice cream, while L. murrayi was isolated from all samples except large scale ice cream. L. monocytogenes and L. ivanovii were detected in farm milk and faecal samples. The isolates belonged to serotype O1. The isolates were also susceptible to amoxicillin, ampicillin, cephalosporin, enrofloxacin, fluemquine, gentamicin, lincospectin, spectinomycin and trimethoxin by 88-100%.
