Research Abstract

Complete amputation of the thoracic limb was performed on 5 goats. The aim of this study is to explain whether the animal can tolerate the amputation or not; to establish the preferable surgical procedure adopted in this condition and to detect the degree of compansatory hypertrophy which is apt to occur in the contralateral thoracic limb. A11 operated animals tolerated will the amputation and they were able to stand, walk and even run few days after the operation. The radical removal of the limb proved to be the surgical technique of choice. Electromyography of some muscles of the contralateral limb showed a significant increase in their electropote-tial activity a fact which allowed the condition of the animal to be healthy through out his life.
