6.2.2.1 Volume of Water Used in the University: Inbound (Treated/Extracted Water)

SDG6
Details:

Volume of Water Used in the University: Inbound (Treated/Extracted Water)

Institutional Status: Verified Institutional Data Provided

The total volume of inbound treated and extracted groundwater utilized across Assiut University facilities during the 2024–2025 reporting period reached 225,326 m³.

When combined with the municipal mains supply, total university water usage stood at 315,001.75 m³ in 2024. Raw groundwater extracted from deep wells and surface water drawn from the Ibrahimia Canal pass through specialized campus purification plants and dedicated non-potable distribution networks to supply landscape irrigation, agricultural farms, and facility operations without depleting municipal drinking water networks.

6.2.1 Measuring Water Consumption

SDG6
Details:

6.2.1 Measuring Water Consumption

Institutional Status: Yes — Whole University Coverage

Assiut University systematically monitors and tracks its total water consumption across all campus facilities, administrative units, residential dormitories, and agricultural research farms. Digital flow meters, building-level monitoring, and central utility accounting track monthly intake from municipal mains supplies and alternative extracted groundwater sources.

Between 2020 and 2024, the university implemented aggressive water conservation policies, plumbing retrofits, smart leak detection, and canal connections for landscape irrigation. In 2024, total campus consumption fell to 315,001.75 m³ (costing 3,780,021.00 EGP). Compared to previous peak consumption levels, the university achieved a net annual freshwater reduction of 405,068.08 m³, generating direct financial savings of 10,498,493.70 EGP.

15.2.6 -The University's off-campus programs on sustainable management of land for tourism

SDG15
Details:

Assiut University offers educational programs and community outreach initiatives that promote the sustainable management of land and natural resources, including areas that support sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and landscape management.

Through the Faculty of Agriculture, the Department of Floriculture, and various environmental and sustainability programs, the University provides training, workshops, awareness campaigns, and extension activities for students, local communities, farmers, and stakeholders. These programs focus on sustainable land use, environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, water-efficient landscaping, and the sustainable management of green spaces and agricultural lands.

Assiut University also collaborates with national and international partners, including the European Union, to organize educational workshops and awareness campaigns that promote sustainable resource management practices. These activities enhance community understanding of the importance of protecting natural landscapes, conserving water resources, improving land productivity, and preserving ecosystems, all of which are essential components of sustainable tourism development.

In addition, the University manages extensive research farms, green areas, botanical landscapes, and agricultural demonstration sites where modern practices such as drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, water reuse, and sustainable land management are demonstrated. These facilities serve as practical learning centers for students, farmers, visitors, and community members, helping to disseminate knowledge on environmentally responsible land use.

The University further supports research, training, and community engagement related to environmental sustainability, heritage preservation, and ecosystem protection, contributing to the long-term sustainable development of Upper Egypt. Through these educational and outreach activities, Assiut University encourages responsible stewardship of natural resources and promotes land management practices that support sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and community well-being.

Evidence of activities includes:

  • Community awareness campaigns on environmental sustainability and resource conservation.

  • Educational workshops conducted with national and international partners.

  • Demonstration and training activities at university research farms and green spaces.

  • Research and extension programs on sustainable agriculture, landscape management, and ecosystem conservation.

  • Student and community participation in sustainability initiatives across the University's eight campuses.

These initiatives demonstrate that Assiut University actively provides educational programs and outreach activities that contribute to the sustainable management of land and natural resources, supporting the principles of sustainable tourism and regional sustainable development.
