The first Mycological Centre in the biodiversity and taxonomy of fungi in Egypt and other Arab Countries It was placed temporarily in the Botany Department, Faculty of Science, but in July 2006 it moved to a permanent building in the University Campus. The building consists of three floors, each of 472.5 square meters (total area 1417.5 square meters). It includes the culture collection cold room (5ºC), molecular biology laboratory, research laboratories, lyophilization room, herbarium of dried cultures of fungi, library and seminar room. The AUMC maintains more than 6000 strains representing more than 500 different species.

They were isolated from numerous sources: soil, air, food-, and feed-stuffs, plant, animal and human bodies from Egypt and Arab, African, Asian and European countries, USA and Argentina, in addition to cultures borrowed from international mycological centres. It is the largest reference culture collection of fungi in Egypt and Arab countries. Academic Staff: 12 university staff-members who are specialized in mycology. Technical Staff: 15 B.Sc. graduates of Botany, Chemistry/Botany, Chemistry/Microbiology and Agriculture.
