Design and manufacturing of a novel four-fingered reconfigurable robotic gripper with enhanced grasping capabilities

Research Abstract

The effectiveness of robotic grippers is critical for the secure and damage-free manipulation of objects with diverse geometries and material properties. This paper presents the design, analysis, and experimental evaluation of a novel reconfigurable four-finger robotic gripper. The proposed design incorporates two stationary fingers fixed to a circular base and two movable fingers repositioned and reoriented via a face gear mechanism, enabling multiple finger configurations to enhance adaptability. A single geared motor drives the opening and closing motions of all four fingers, simplifying the actuation mechanism. The robotic gripper was fabricated using 3D printing technology, ensuring cost-effective and precise manufacturing. On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Professor Dr. Khaled Salah, Dean of the Faculty, received Professor Dr. Hesham Aref, Professor of Architecture and former Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Fayoum University, and Professor Dr. Islam Nazmy, Professor of Architecture and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Shubra, Benha University, for Community Service and Environmental Development. This meeting took place on the sidelines of their participation as examiners for the doctoral dissertation submitted by researcher and engineer Nihal Nabil Mohamed, entitled:

"The Impact of Operational Policies on the Architectural Design of Hospital Units in Egypt."

Also present at the meeting were Professor Dr. Ahmed Helal Mohamed, Professor of Architecture and former Head of the Department of Architecture, Professor Dr. Nady Mostafa Abdel Karim, Professor of Environmental Control in the Department of Architecture, and the dissertation supervisors.

During the meeting, the Dean expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the examination committee for their efforts and valuable contributions in reviewing the dissertations of the Department of Architecture, as well as their participation in reviewing scientific research submitted for publication in the Faculty's Journal of Engineering Sciences, which is indexed in the Scopus database. During the meeting, they also praised the level of scientific papers prepared by postgraduate students in the Department of Architectural Engineering.

The college celebrates World Environment Day

The College celebrates World Environment Day and issues an environmental statement.

In line with the university and college's commitment to the environment and its issues, and on the occasion of World Environment Day, which falls on June 5th each year, the Community Service and Environmental Development Committee held a comprehensive meeting for the month of June. Various committees affiliated with the Community Service and Environmental Development sector of the college participated, along with Professor Dr. Khaled Salah, Dean of the College. The meeting was attended by the following members of the Community Service and Environmental Development Committee: Professor Dr. Salwa Abdel Rahman Mogahed, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development and Head of the Committee; Professor Dr. Mohamed Abu El-Qassem Mohamed, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering and former Dean of the College; Professor Dr. Ahmed Helal Ahmed, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Architectural Engineering; Professor Dr. Samia Abdel Fattah Ali, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering; Professor Dr. Hesham Mohamed Ahmed Diab, Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering; and Professor Dr. Nabil Youssef Abdel Shafi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Also in attendance were Professor M. In his address, the Dean of the College emphasized the college's commitment to all environmental issues, particularly those with engineering dimensions such as water, energy, pollution, and environmental impact, in addition to the various dimensions of sustainability and its goals as set by the United Nations. He also affirmed that this commitment stems from the university's focus on environmental issues, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy, President of the University, and Professor Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development.

Professor Dr. Salwa Abdel Rahman Megahed, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, presented a report on the college's activities during the 2025-2026 academic year. These activities contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and highlight the college's active role in this field, alongside the various other activities undertaken by the college's Community Service and Environmental Development sector. In this context, the College issued an environmental statement affirming its commitments, which reads as follows:

As part of the College of Engineering's commitment to its academic and community role, and its keenness to support the state's directions towards achieving sustainable development and preserving natural resources for current and future generations, the College emphasizes the importance of establishing the concepts of environmental sustainability and promoting responsible practices that contribute to protecting the environment and improving the quality of life.

The College calls upon all academic departments, faculty members, teaching assistants, staff, and students to actively contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through:

* Spreading a culture of environmental conservation and rationalizing resource consumption.

* Rationalizing electricity consumption by switching off lights and unused appliances after work hours.

* Setting air conditioning units to appropriate temperatures and not operating them in unoccupied rooms.

* Expanding the use of electronic correspondence and documents and reducing paper printing as much as possible.

* Using water wisely and immediately reporting any leaks or malfunctions.

* Encouraging waste sorting and recycling of recyclable materials whenever possible.

* Maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities, buildings, and open spaces within the College. * Encouraging reuse, recycling, and waste reduction as much as possible.

* Supporting environmental activities and initiatives aimed at raising awareness of sustainability issues and climate change.

* Integrating sustainability and environmental conservation concepts into the educational process, research, and student projects.

* Encouraging innovative ideas and initiatives that contribute to improving the environmental performance of the college and the community.

The college also emphasizes that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is a collective responsibility requiring the participation of all its members, and that commitment to sound environmental practices is an essential part of the college's culture and its mission towards the community and the environment.

The college calls upon all academic departments to support initiatives and activities related to environmental sustainability and to document outstanding efforts and practices that contribute to enhancing the college's position as a leading educational institution in serving the community and promoting sustainable development.

Engineering students at Assiut University achieve international research breakthrough in artificial intelligence and the development of intelligent traffic systems.

Assiut University engineering students achieve an international research achievement in artificial intelligence and the development of smart traffic systems

Within the framework of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s direction towards supporting innovation and employing artificial intelligence applications in facing development challenges, students of the Faculty of Engineering at Assiut University achieved a distinguished research achievement by publishing a scientific research extracted from their graduation project in a prestigious international scientific journal, which addressed the development of an intelligent system for adaptive control of traffic signals using artificial intelligence and multi-agent reinforcement learning techniques.

This achievement reflects the advanced scientific level of Egyptian university students and their ability to produce applied research related to the needs of society and contribute to supporting the country’s efforts towards digital transformation and the development of smart cities and intelligent transportation systems.

Students participated in preparing the research: Ahmed Hamdi Muhammad Mustafa, Salah El-Din Talaat Younis, Karim Hatem Hashem, John Imad Fawzi, Abdul Rahman Shaaban Muhammad Farghali, and Abdul Rahman Ali Muhammad Kamal, under the supervision of a scientific team from the Departments of Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering at the College of Engineering.

This success confirms the growing role of Egyptian universities in supporting applied scientific research and preparing cadres capable of providing innovative solutions that contribute to achieving sustainable development goals and building a knowledge economy.
