Research Abstract

Egyptian natural clays without cation exchange or acid treatment were investigated as efficient catalysts for the synthesis of n-butyl acetate. The original and calcined samples have been characterized by, TG-DTA, XRD and surface area measurements. The acidity of clays was determined using decomposition of isopropanol and chemisorptions of pyridine and dimethyl pyridine. The catalytic activity performance of the clays was carried out using esterification of acetic acid with n-butyl alcohol in liquid phase. The results revealed that the clays are highly active and selective towards ester formation. The activity was correlated with the strength of the acid sites.
